#PublishingReinvented 84 - Your 2022 Author Mental Game Plan
The Benefits of A New Year
Many cultures believe that the process of moving from one year to another allows forces greater than ourselves to come into play. Whatever you believe, a new year can bring change.
Some of this is represented in the concept of “Resolutions,” where good intentions go to die.
Can writers reinvent resolutions?
The classic set of author resolutions revolve around finding more time to write and writing more. Easy peasy? Not so much, if the resolution doesn’t make it past January.
A suggestion to reinvent your resolutions is to consider the “mental game” of writing.
The concept of the mental game originated in the field of sports. It is based around two practical tools:
THE WARM-UP
The warm-up allows us to start a writing session off right.
This means relaxing so we can concentrate later. It also means self talk to inspire our writing confidence through affirmations or reminders of what we will focus on.
Finally, it allows us to count our blessings and recognize all of the wonderful things in our lives within and outside our writing worlds. A writing session warm up is a short period before you write, where you talk to yourself, relax and breath.
THE WIND DOWN
The wind down allows us to reflect on our writing session. This allows us to celebrate, consider anything we may need to fix, take notes, and look ahead to our next session and what we will bring to it. This allows us to assess and relax, preparing us for the next session. This should be done just after your writing session.
2022 can be a great year for us. Improving our mental writing game will help us to keep on track and stay positive, despite what life throws at us.
Happy New Year! Happy New Mental Game.
