#PublishingReinvented 64 - Now For The Hard Part
Writing a Better Book
I have published 12 novels. And I know what I have to do for my next. I have to address the weaknesses in my work. Yes, I get lots of great reader reviews, readers are mostly very kind, but I have to get better.
Why? Ask a mountain climber the same thing.
The challenge I face is what many writers face. You may face it too.
Is a book something just to be completed or can we strive to make it as good as it can be?
Most writers know what they are lacking too. A beta read report or your reader reviews or editing feedback will give you clues. And there’s no point blaming readers.
Look at your book and wonder, can I make the next one better?
Here are some suggestions for this difficult journey:
Read one of the best-selling books in your genre, one that is from a popular author at the height of their power. Ask yourself, why is this book and this author so popular? Is it interior dialogue, pace, subject matter, likable characters, a compelling beginning, themes or a powerful journey?
Take notes. We are not copying, we are learning. Focus on what that author gets right and what you need to improve on. Watch what sentences and words the author use on each page to get this aspect right, write them down. Learn how to fix what you need to fix.
Implement the changes, whether it’s a rewrite of your current Work In Progress or your next book, focus on the areas you need to get right and check that you fix your writing, as it should be fixed, on every page, not just occasionally. Fix the holes in your work.
This is what I am working on. Getting better as a writer, not blaming others, but working on improving.
The hard work. The good work.
