PublishingReinvented 42 - Retargeting + The Truth About Book Marketing
A few issues back (#36) I described a new Amazon ad type, Remarketing ads.
This is the idea that after you click an ad on Amazon and don’t buy the book, that ad will follow you around for a few weeks and reappear on Amazon and other sites to see if you change your mind.
You may hate this idea, but are TV ads that repeat any worse?
And remarketing can work.
Sometimes.
The other books we tested lost money on their remarketing ads so we stopped the ads.
Keep in mind that the tests were run with our money and the only client who is now paying for their remarketing ads is the one in profit.
What did we learn:
Retargeting ads may work for books with a long history of running Amazon ads.
They will probably be a waste of money otherwise.
This leads me to an interesting concept: Truth in Marketing.
The truth is…..not all book marketing is successful.
The reading public decides which books to buy and when. You may have written the best book ever, but for some reason, the public passes on it.
Some ad campaigns don’t make their money back, some ad campaigns make it back, and some make a good profit, some a very good profit.
Advertising any new product, in particular, is a gamble. You have to be prepared to test, retest and evolve. As ads become an integral part of an author’s life, these concepts need to be considered.
When I look at the ad campaigns we do that sell a lot of books it is always the same, the books that sell well have lots of reader & editorial reviews, their descriptions are compelling, and they have an interesting cover. With the level of competition out there we cannot slip on any of these things and hope to sell well.
The good news is BooksGoSocial assesses all the books we work with, and we advise on how to improve how they are presented and even provide free cover upgrades when needed.
