Predictability or boredom?
Most readers want the comfort of a happy ending, a new way of looking at the world or a murder solved, but they also want us to deliver it in a different way.
They want our stories to be the same, but different. They want the well worn tropes, a flawed main character, a struggle to reach the goal, a satisfying challenge, a worthy resolution.
But if all we are doing is reproducing tropes we can’t expect to find a huge interest from the reading public. Can we?
I suggest we should bring something new to the table each time, something that will make our book unique.
Here are some ways you can make your book unique, but the same:
Take notes when you read about the tropes other writers use.
Make them your own by adapting the characters and language.
Mash genre tropes. Have a lead genre and a subgenre. I’m finding interesting tropes for historical fiction in children’s fantasy. You get the idea.
TikTok tests:
We are expanding our TikTok tests. This is where we provide free TikTok videos and added promotion to a particular style that is targeted at readers in your genre.
To be included please email me a link to your book on Amazon: laurence@bgsadmin.com
We can only do a small number of tests in August, but you can also indicate your interest in receiving details of our upcoming paid “TikTok Done for You” service by emailing me. We will be carefully vetting books for that. Not all who apply will be selected. A good number of reader reviews, an excellent cover and great description will all be needed.
