The pre-Corona world of publishing is not coming back.
Not the way it was anyway, selecting one winner from ten thousand writers, building them up and then discarding them, all in the name of profit for the mega-corporations that have dominated publishing in the Western world for the past hundred years and more.
You will miss the lottery-like excitement of hearing about authors who’ve been selected by a God-like editor to receiver a $100,000 advance, but you may not miss:
The hype surrounding the latest media-friendly author. How many live up to it?
The trashing of every rule of a green world, chopping down trees to pulp them & truck pieces to stores and then truck 50% of them back to be pulped. Print is good. Print on Demand is better. Why don’t bigger bookstores have the equipment on site to do this? Because the publishing houses stock the book stores almost free of charge. But there is a price to pay. Printed books are important, but the “sale or return,” system is unsustainable.
And not being chosen again for this traditional system anyway. You may love the old ways, but getting a book published the old way is a trek, similar to climbing Mount Everest or locating the source of the Nile. First, you have to submit to and be selected by an agent, the high-priests of publishing. Then a demi-God publisher has to think you are commercially viable. And don’t for a minute think you can write anything “different.” They want books that conform and look like the last big best-seller.
A new world is emerging for many industries post lockdown. Publishing is one of them.

Laurence, I am a brand new subscriber. Very much interested in your NFT offer. Looking forward to receiving my first newsletter tomorrow, Monday. Thanks, Mary
Hi, Laurence.
In today's email you asked for comments on what we might like to see covered. In terms of the future of publishing, I am interested in Kindle Vella and the similar services out there. Radish, others? What kinds of authors and books are having some traction on those platforms as Vella is in Beta? Who has already jumped into Vella and what are their expectations? Perhaps a survey of your membership to start? I personally am much more interested in the long term possibilities of serial story-telling platforms than I am in NFTs.
So that's my two cents. Thanks! - Jack Massa
