“Life is a daring adventure, or it is nothing at all,” said Helen Keller, American author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer. Born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, she lost her sight and hearing after a bout of illness at the age of nineteen months. She faced constant challenges, all her life.
All of us face challenges.
We all have our rocks to push up the hill. And for all of us, the rock is there again the next day, facing us, accusingly.
But where would we be without our rocks? They provide meaning, purpose and the fleeting joy of reaching the top of a hill. Even if another hill looms beyond it.
Better a fleeing joy than none at all.
I am exploring the field of quantum physics these days for a new book. The bizarre mathematics behind the quantum world shows that waves have properties of particles, and particles behave like waves. Applications of quantum mechanics include explaining phenomena in nature as well as developing technologies that rely upon quantum effects, like integrated circuits and lasers.
This email and the books created on computers are all the results of quantum effects we still struggle to understand.
Some even believe that consciousness is a quantum phenomenon and that we may one day travel great distances and even see the past, thanks to quantum mechanics, but like those predicting television a hundred years ago, I hesitate to confirm exactly what it will all look like.
Perhaps the iPhone 50 will allow us to see the past, though not interact with it.
