#PublishingReinvented 3
Vanity Publishing Must Die.
Last week we discussed how publishers exploit writers. One class of publisher takes this exploitation to an art form.
They are vanity publishers. One author recently contacted me. He had paid over $20,000 to have one book published.
His publisher also had control of his ebook pricing and had set the ebook price at $12 to encourage the sales of hardback copies, as the author had been persuaded to have a large stock printed. And they take a cut of his royalties and pay him late. His sales are poor.
With many book stores still closed and too many books from big publishers looking for places on the front tables it is unlikely that print editions from small publishers will do well in the coming months.
This should encourage all who pay a vanity publisher to stop.
You can now get professional editors, cover designers and book uploaders (we do all three at BooksGoSocial) to get your book ready and upload it to Amazon, and you pay far less than the fees vanity publishers charge to do this for you.
How can you reinvent publishing? By uploading your books to Amazon and getting paid directly by them every month into your bank account.
Gross exploitation is what vanity publishers are good at.
