Change at the Biggest International Book Fair
The Frankfurt Bookfair is back. I visited it last week. It was live again with a busy collection of halls featuring publishers big and small, countries, big and small and service providers from advertising to printing to shipping and everything in between.
I heard complaints that there are a lot of younger people on the stands and a lot of the older publishing crowd are moving on. The publishing industry is shedding its skin again.
I enjoyed seeing almost every country with a stand, including Afghanistan.
And I met some interesting, incredibly creative US publishers.
But you need strong feet to walk the miles at this show.
See a short 15 sec video of some experiences I had at this link.
One of the highlights for me was a TikTok stand in the central plaza. This was overrun with people by Saturday with milling crowds and a half hour line for eager TikTokers to get inside and experience the joy of a big selfie light!
And TokTok had a stage you can see below, which had a series of #booktokers performing all day Sunday for the public.
No other social media was present in this way. TikTok embraces publishing.
It feels like the start of a new era.
It took me a year to get a handle on TikTok, but now we are 10 months into delivering services on TikTok and I’m sending short TT videos as messages to people, so watch out, the world of book promotion is changing.

Great report.
Glad to see some aspects of the publishing industry are reviving. Books are important.
